Special UN meeting on fighting AIDS
promises to set new national targets The General Assembly met on June 3, 2006 to review and revise its commitment to fighting the AIDS epidemic, setting some goals for 2008. A lot of emphasis seemed to be placed on protecting women from the disease and the need for prevention. In terms of women, commitments made in this declaration include: promoting gender equality and empowerment of women, and educating people on the disease (particularly the youth and all females). With regards to prevention, commitments include: providing both male and female condoms, encouraging responsible sexual behavior (abstinence, fidelity), providing sterile injection equipment for drug users, and educating the masses. Another major goal is to fight “stigma and social exclusion” of those infected.
